Tokyo Motor Show: Nissan unveils the all-new Elgrand van
At today’s opening of the Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan Motor revealed its much-anticipated fourth-generation Elgrand full-size van. Given the success of the previous E52 model, which enjoyed an impressive 11-year run, Nissan has opted for a conservative approach, retaining familiar design elements while introducing enhancements.
This model sports a more robust body with bulkier sides and a revised front end featuring sophisticated LED lighting instead of traditional halogen headlamps. According to the press release, the design team aimed to evoke a sense of excitement and anticipation for extraordinary journeys.
The new Elgrand measures 4995 mm in length, 1895 mm in width, and 1975 mm in height, reflecting increases of 30 mm, 45 mm, and 160 mm, respectively, compared to its predecessor. This makes the new model slightly larger than its primary rival, the Toyota Alphard.
The base configuration includes a third-generation e-Power hybrid system that combines a gasoline engine ZR15DDTe with a compact, quiet “5-in-1” electric motor, integrating a traction motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and transmission. The vehicle features all-wheel drive with an e-4orce system for optimal torque distribution.
During everyday driving, torque is evenly allocated between the front and rear axles, while slightly more is directed to the rear during turns, enhancing maneuverability. e-4orce’s operational status is displayed on the driver’s dashboard.
Another significant innovation is the active suspension system, which dynamically adjusts shock absorption for each wheel based on road conditions, reducing body roll and ensuring outstanding ride comfort.
Standard equipment includes ProPilot, a semi-autonomous driving system that allows trust in automation in traffic and at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The driver’s seat has been positioned higher than in the previous model, leading to improved visibility.
The interior features generous use of natural leather and wood accents, with a unified digital instrument cluster and media display, each measuring 14.3 inches. The top-tier Elgrand will include a premium Bose audio system with 22 speakers and ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colors. Powertrain specifications remain undisclosed.
Sales of the fourth-generation Elgrand in Japan are expected to commence closer to 2026.
